RESIDENT EVIL 2 (or BIO HAZARD 2 in Japan)
proved to be one of the best
releases last year on the PlayStation, only to be overshadowed perhaps by
METAL GEAR SOLID. A gripping "survival horror" title,
RESIDENT EVIL 2
combined great (and bloody) graphics, an interesting plot, average voice
acting, fun game play, and of course, suspenseful music.
This soundtrack brought out by Viz is exactly what one would expect: all the
musical themes and pieces found in the video game. It is separated into
sections based upon where the piece occurred within the game. However I
found the back of the CD to be mislabeled, as there were 34 tracks on the
disk, not 31 as it implied (my attempt to correct this is in the CD listing
here).
The pieces taken from the movie segments of the game are a little more
varied and higher quality than the ones from game play. A cross between
military beats and horror suspense, with the occasional symphonic style
breaks from the tension. My personal favorite of these is the ending/credit
song with Leon stating "Hey, it's up to us to take out Umbrella" before
entering into a electric guitar rock.
Other themes within the game are also present. Everything from the
safe rooms where you could save your game away from patrolling zombies, to
the various gruesome transformations of "G." The music is mostly electronic
with long drawn out mysterious sections, or riveting
PSYCHO-like violent
strikes.
The themes are made to repeat infinitely, but unlike some other video game
soundtracks I have heard, they nicely skip to the next song before repeating
twice.
Overall, this is mainly a CD
for fans who have played RESIDENT EVIL 2 itself
and desire a suspenseful electronic symphonic selection of music (Halloween
perhaps?). Part of the flavor of these songs come from the emotions sparked
while playing the game, and as such would probably not be attractive to
people who have not seen the game. However if you have played the
game and wish to rekindle memories of zombies stalking the streets
anywhere you go, this CD would not steer you wrong.
